Bethlehem

Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ. If you’re looking for a more spiritual way of celebrating it, then try heading to the city where Christ was said to be born, Bethlehem.

As one might imagine, Christmas here is a major event. In Bethlehem, there are wide variety of different Christian denominations, thus Christmas day is not celebrated on a particular day. For example Roman Catholics and Protestants celebrate Christmas Day on December 25, whilst Greek, Syrian and other Orthodox Christians observe it on 6th January.

During this Christmas period, similar to European and North American customs, the streets are adorned with flags and lights and other decorations.  In the streets, there are Christmas markets, and plays are performed. On the door of every Christian home a cross is painted, and nativity scenes are displayed in the household.

On Christmas Eve there is a procession, lead by galloping horsemen and police mounting Arabian horses.  This is followed by a man carrying a cross who mounts a black steed. After him come government officials and churchmen. The procession is solemn and quiet as it enters the Church and places an ancient effigy of baby Christ. Visitors then go down deep winding stairs that lead to a grotto. In here the birth of Jesus is marked with a silver star.

Moscow

If you’re looking for snow and festive charm, a more traditional Christmas, then Moscow can provide you with an unforgettable, fairytale experience.

In this city, you’ll find a variety of attractions to soak up the festive charm. Moscow has an enormous amount of natural space, nearly 100 parks and garden. In particular the 18th-century landscaped park at Kuzminki can be spectacular this time of year.

Here you can find Ded Moroz (“Grandfather Frost”), who is the Russian Father Christmas. Amongst the frozen lakes you’ll find wooden cottages and carved animals. These include figures of Ded Moroz and his granddaughter, Snegurochka, the snow maiden.

At the WTs (All-Russian Exhibition centre) you’ll find a variety of beautiful sights. There are delicately constructed pavilions and ornate fountains representing a colourful pastiche of styles. In this two kilometre complex, you’ll also find an ice rink, and plenty of quirky and fascinating museums, shops and rides hidden away.

If you’re looking for something absolutely unique and wintery, try heading to the island of Serebryany Bor, which translates to Silver Pine Forest. Here you’ll find people who refer themselves as Walruses, swim in holes in the ice. If you’re brave and adventurous, and really want to feel winter to the bone, then give it a shot!
